There have been times in anime when a song is played over and over again, something that has the tendency to make even the best songs feared and hated by all, given enough time. The best example I can think of that happened recently would be having "Idol Talk" from MACROSS PLUS being on three of the four CDs out, and the serious airtime it had on-screen. Well, with the final EVANGELION III CD (out 22 May 1996), I believe I have found the ultimate example of this. This CD, which has just under a third of its tracks devoted to "Fly Me to the Moon," can practically be called the "Fly Me to the Moon brainwash CD."
The first two tracks have nothing whatsoever to do with the series, as they were never a part of the original BGM. Like the second CD's 'Yokan', these two tracks are image tracks. This disc could have used much, much more of them, though, as over a third of this disc is just "Fly Me to the Moon," repeated endlessly -- on and on and on, with no hope of relief whatsoever.
But I digress. To be honest, with the exception of tracks 6 and 13 (which are instrumental versions of FMttM), tracks 1 through 22 are pretty good, bringing decent music together and leading up to the final few songs of the series. In fact, even though the track listing doesn't say it, there are two quick and dirty instrumental versions of "Zankoku na Tenshi no Teize," called "The Heady Feeling of Freedom" and "Good, or Don't Be". Done with guitars and piano, they are pretty nice versions of the song Gainax should have rammed down everyone's throats. Also, the chronology of the BGM tracks is in order, so that as the listener progresses from 3 to 20, the arrangement conveys an increasing sense of urgency, especially after track 16 or so, when the music gets more and more ghostly.
If one has actually gone and bought this disc, then I seriously suggest that they stop listening to it after track 22, as after that point the brainwashing begins.
There are, in total, thirteen versions of "Fly Me to the Moon" on this disc (counting tracks 6 and 13), and as far as I am concerned, they are all less than sterling. The best of this overused lot might be that of "B-22a Type," which uses no voice, just a few odd sounds on a synthesizer. Thankfully, the only long version of "Fly Me to the Moon" is the Aya London Beat Version. Unfortunately, it is probably the second worst version of the song ever done.
Aside from the music, the CD comes in a box with a character booklet. The artwork is well done by Hasegawa Shinya. However, this is all just pretty packaging on a wasted product. My personal opinion is to let someone else buy this CD and then copy the the first 22 tracks onto tape, unless of course you are an EVANGELION III fanatic. In any case, be careful with your ¥3000 on this one.
