CHISA IN LA
The Yokoyama Chisa Concert (continued)

Ms. Yokoyama was very energetic; her smile made everyone feel at ease and made her performance even more enjoyable. Several times during the performance of the third song, they had to stop recording because of various audio troubles. The band kept the crowd entertained with musical antics and jokes; a welcome respite to those feeling a bit odd at having to switch on their enthusiasm on cue. Their fourth number, "Pretty Sammy the Magical Girl" from the OVA of the same name, went smoothly, and the band went on to perform their second instrumental from the TENCHI TV series.
Things got very interesting when "Talent for Love" began. Sharyn Scott, the English counterpart to Ms. Yokoyama, shared the stage with her duet partner as Ms. Yokoyama launched into the song--in English! And very good English at that. Ms. Scott and Ms. Yokoyama performed beautifully together, sharing the stage like long-time partners. You could tell they were both having fun, and the audience was, too. But sooner or later, a technical snag was bound to happen, and several retakes later the song was finally in the can.
Looking at the song list, "Crazy for You" was the next song. While the title was very familiar, I refused to believe that she would sing that song of the same title by Madonna. It would seem out of place in this set. Not to mention the prospect of hearing Sasami sing a Madonna song felt, well, wrong.
Just before the song was to begin, more audio troubles stopped the taping. The band was informed that the problem will take some time to fix, and so they did what they do best and entertained us with one of their own pieces. Ms. Yokoyama, instead of exiting the stage, stayed and danced to the music! The crowd enjoyed this impromptu performance and clapped along. This was probably one of the few moments where it felt more like a live event than a staged production.
After the audio problems had been solved, the band proceeded to start the next number, "Crazy for You", and I realized it as soon as I heard the first bar of this Madonna classic. Ms. Yokoyama sang with a deep, soulful voice, and once again, we were all astonished by her more than capable English ability, as well as her singing talent. It took a few tries, but she got a perfect take third time around.

Sharyn Scott, the woman who sings the English Pioneer songs.

For the eighth song, Ms. Scott performed the English version of the TENCHI TV opening never before heard by an audience. Her energetic vocals and playful stage presence definitely captured the audience's attention, and the band's excellent of adaptation of the music, right down to the male rap portion, made the experience wholly enjoyable. Especially good was bassist Marco Mendoza, who not only played a mean bass line but also lend his voice for the rapping portion of this song.
Another instrumental number separated the next set of vocals, and once again Ms. Yokoyama took stage to perform the PRETTY SAMMY ending theme and "Talent for Love" in Japanese. Both songs only took one take, and as Ms. Yokoyama left the stage the band prepared for the finale. First, the last instrumental was performed: a reworked slowed down version of "I'm a Pioneer", which led into the last song of the day, "I'm a Pioneer" with Ms. Yokoyama and Ms. Scott sharing the stage once more. Ms. Scott's sultry yet powerful vocals led the song to a great start as the crowd clapped along as hard as they could. Then, Ms. Yokoyama joined in and picked up the next line where Ms. Scott left off, and soon both were dancing and singing. When the performance came to an end, the applause and cheers from the crowd thundered for minutes, as bouquets were handed to both Ms. Yokoyama and Ms. Scott by two lucky audience members. Finally, the crowd subsided, and Mr. Nakamura took the opportunity to thank everyone for their participation. Prizes were handed out and both stars stuck around for photos and autographs.
There is a unique feeling one gets from experiencing an event such as this. And, although the event felt staged at times, it was very "live." After all, we're probably be the only audience members who'll ever see Ms. Yokoyama do an impromptu dance to a song she doesn't know, or catch her fiddling with a keyboard during a break as she tried to play a song. It doesn't get more live than that.
