HERE IS GREENWOOD
-- by Keith Rhee

Created by Nasu Yukie, HERE IS GREENWOOD is a comedy detailing the life of Hasukawa Kazuya and his friends living in a high school dorm. What originally started out as a manga serialization in Flower Comics and radio dramas was later turned into an OVA series. This extremely funny title became a favorite with many anime clubs early on in the form of fansubs and just recently saw an official domestic release in the USA by Software Sculptors.
Kazuya, the younger of two orphaned brothers, leaves home to live in his high school dorm when his older brother marries Kazuya's first love, Sumire. The caring but slightly airheaded Sumire seems unaware of Kazuya's true feelings towards her, and so Kazuya resolves not to return home until he graduates high school.
Escaping the newlywed household does Kazuya no good, however -- he's living in Greenwood, a dorm full of weirdos and rejects, and as a special welcome, his dormmates trick Kazuya into thinking that his (rather feminine looking) roommate Shun is actually a real girl! Though Kazuya soon discovers the prank, his tense and sensitive nature leaves him open to further teasing from Shinobu and Mitsuru, two elder students living next door who enjoy tormenting Kazuya to no end. The fact that his older brother is working as the school doctor (and also enjoys teasing Kazuya as much as Shinobu and Mitsuru) doesn't seem to help matters much, either. But by and by, Kazuya begins to adapt to life at Greenwood...
The second episode deals with Shinobu's sadistic sister Nagisa trying to get revenge on her younger brother. To do this, she kidnaps Shun's younger brother Reina (who also looks just like a girl) and threatens to hurt him unless Shinobu submits himself to her humiliation. Nagisa's plans backfire on her, however, when Shinobu manipulates Mitsuru, Shun, and Kazuya into storming Nagisa's apartment and rescueing Reina themselves. Shinobu himself makes a last-minute appearance to deliver the killing blow (and if you're like most everyone else, you'll literally die with laughter at the ending).
Though I'm not a particular fan of the shoujo genre in general, I find GREENWOOD enjoyable, mostly because the story's main emphasis is on its manic comedy rather than an angst-ridden romance story. The wacky antics of the main characters and the various situations are hilarious to watch. The clean-cut OVA character designs are recognizably bishounen, but they're not overdone like the designs from CLAMP. The overall tone is goofy and lighthearted, and this atmosphere is underscored by its upbeat background music.
Even if the shoujo genre insn't a favorite of yours, I suggest you give GREENWOOD a try. The story isn't very serious, but it's uproariously funny, and on that account alone is well worth watching.
