Quick Looks:

RANMA 1/2 1997 Memorial Calendar: This year's calendar continues the size reduction of last years (16.5"x24" from 20"x27") with another 6 2-month posters. Nothing incredibly memorable this time but the artwork is reasonable.

TENCHI MUYO Ryo-Oh-Ki 1997 Calendar: A 12"x12" tear-off wall calendar done again by manga artist Hitoshi Okuda. If you liked his style in the comics (available domestically by Viz or in Japan through Kadokawa), this is more of the same. Only ¥1000 too...

Studio Ghibli 1997 13 Month Calendar: The 1996 edition of this calendar was my favorite surprise last year, and this years edition is even better. In a slightly oversized spiral bound format (16.5"x12" folded), this calendar has thirteen original pictures all from the Ghibli universe. From NAUSICAÄ and LAPUTA to ON YOUR MARK and MONONOKE HIME, this is perfect for any Ghibli fan.

MACROSS 15th Anniversary Calendar: Features gorgeous artwork from the original MACROSS TV show and theatrical release, MACROSS II, MACROSS PLUS, MACROSS 7, and MACROSS DIGITAL MISSION VF-X. A promo poster for VF-X is added as a bonus.

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION Calendars A and B: Calendar A features the EVANGELION cast in various settings — walking down the street, sitting by the swimming pool, etc. Unfortunately, the character illustrations are about average; they don't look very similar to Sadamoto's original character illustrations.
Calendar B carries Gainax's kanji character mania to the max — the days of the month are all given in kanji! If you don't know how to read numbers in kanji, this calendar isn't terribly useful, but it looks very sharp, with faithful renditions of the Eva cast. Very artfully done.

GUNDAM WING CALENDAR: Those expecting images of the Gundams will be disappointed — the emphasis here is on GUNDAM WING'S pretty-faced character designs. Watch the Gundam team stand on a school balcony, in a subway station... you get the idea.

TAIHO SHICHAUZO CALENDAR: At ¥2800, the 1997 TAIHO SHICHAUZO calendar foregoes the standard six or seven bound image format in favor of a large A1-size sheet featuring all of the vehices from the manga series. And lining the bottom of the sheet are the twelve calendar months. If this seems skimpy, the package also includes a weekly desktop calendar (also featuring all manga-exclusive art), and this is where the real value is. The large sheet, while impressive, is nothing more than a glorified poster. The calendar is an afterthought.
