Chisa, the voice for Sasami from TENCHI
MUYO!, comes to the states to strut her singing voice to the
Southern California crowd. Pioneer releases its first seiyuu idol
singer LD, CHISA AND
THE HEAVEN AND EARTH BAND LIVE IN L.A.
The
LD contains seven small interviews with Chisa in which she
discusses her views on America and L.A. and how different they do
things in L.A. She also remarks on how much fun she had filming the
music videos for her two songs: "Pretty Coquettish Bomber" and
"Yumemireba Yumemo Yume Janai" (If One Sees Dreams They May Not Be
Dreams).
Seventeen
tracks in all, two of them are original music videos and the
other six are live footage from the Chisa Concert in L.A. Not only
does Chisa sing, but Sharyn Scott, the English singer for many of the
TENCHI MUYO! opening and ending songs, belts out a great
rendition of "Talent of Love." Sharyn also sings in duet with Chisa,
"I'm a Pioneer," the second series opening song as well as her version
of the TENCHI MUYO! TV opening song originally sung by the
group Sonia. Sharyn does a good job and her voice is very strong, but
Sonia's version is still better.
I
enjoyed watching Chisa sing "Yumemireba Yumemo Yume Janai," the
opening song for the PRETTY SAMMY TV
series. She really looks like she is having fun both at the concert
and while making the original music videos. Her other famous Sasami
songs, "Pretty Sammy," "The Magic Girl," "Baka," and "Pretty
Coquettish Bomber" are also well sung, lively and upbeat.
If the
original music videos were in the TENCHI MUYO! or
PRETTY SAMMY TV anime theme, I would have enjoyed this a lot
more. The scenes of the magician in the "Yumemireba Yumemo Yume
Janai" video have almost nothing to do with PRETTY SAMMY, and
the music video makes no sense except that it is about magic. They
should have ditched the wizard and kept Chisa as the main focus. I
believe that the music video would have been more enjoyable to anime
fans if they had did something related to the anime itself. Most
anime fans were probably looking for Chisa dressed up in a Pretty
Sammy outfit instead of the music video that was done.
The other
music video of "Pretty Coquettish Bomber" also does not make
much sense either. The whole video is shot in a rundown alley
someplace in L.A. with a bunch of hoods threatening Chisa. Again, I
wish the director would have watched about three hours of TENCHI
MUYO! or PRETTY SAMMY to be able to get more of that theme
in both of these videos. The director, Leszek Burzynski, does not
give me the notion that he has watched any anime in his life.
I think
the music videos would have made this LD more appealing if
Chisa wore a Pretty Sammy outfit. It is what the Chisa fans want to
see, and it would at least be related somewhat to the anime instead of
being so vague.
The
concert itself is fine except for the fact that Chisa's wardrobe
does not compliment her. Chisa's two outfits are right out of the
70s, and do not make her look very appealing, especially those
elevator shoes! The second outfit is better, but not the best. I
could see that the audience was probably made up of a few friends and
die-hard Chisa fans, no more than thirty people or more. I was
half-expecting it to be held in a large concert hall with hundreds of
screaming Chisa fans, but then again, this is not Japan.
All in
all, only the real die-hard TENCHI MUYO!, PRETTY SAMMY
or Yokoyama Chisa fans will want this LD just to see the
cute, pretty Chisa smile and sing her heart out. Otherwise, pass it
up, and buy the PRETTY SAMMY
OVA LD instead; it is much funnier.
