"EX One Year Anniversary: Congratulations!"
(sketch by Scott Frazier) |
About a year ago, I sat down to write my first EX
Editorial. It seems strange that so much time has passed so quickly.
And yet, when I look back, I realize that a lot has indeed happened in
the last year.
If
you go back and look at issue 1.1
and then look at the last couple of issues, you can't help but notice
that we've certainly grown. And with that growth has come additional
issues, both good and bad. Such as trying to adhere to a realistic
schedule while the workload steadily increases. Or trying to explain to
people that EX does not sell the products we review.
Or getting nasty e-mail from people about my complaining about the
"sideburns" in
anime these days.
Our
biggest hurdle was convincing the fans and the industry that we were
not simply a flash-in-the-pan organization that would fold up its tent
and move on, leaving readers behind when things got complicated. We
had to prove to our readers and ourselves that there would
always be a "next issue." And, after three or four issues, we started
getting a lot of e-mail reflecting that our efforts were not in vain.
Further evidence of this was the overwhelmingly positive response to
our CD ROM survey.
We
have also managed to secure the respect and support of many of the U.S.
anime companies, and I am grateful for their early and unyielding support.
Contest prizes, screener tapes, and release information are the most
obvious aspect of this. But even more important is the fact that they
treat us with respect and courtesy, as we have always treated them in
the past.
EX
has survived and thrived despite numerous problems and obstacles
incredibly tight production deadlines, technological difficulties,
multiple and conflicting projects, and probably most dangerous of all,
my inability to do math (without bending the laws of physics, under no
circumstances does a six week production schedule equate to ten issues a year).
It is a testament to the dedication of its staff members, and to the
people who provide a great deal of "behind the scenes" support. To
all of those people, to the staff of EX, and to our readers, I offer
you my most heartfelt thanks.
Ex animo,

Charles McCarter
Publisher/Editor in Chief
PS: Look for us at our Panel at AnimeExpo 97! We have a lot to talk about.
