A quick look at some of the new shows currently airing in Japan. For a
complete list of shows currently running, see last issue's Remote Access. An
interesting thing to note is the air times of several of these new shows is
"late night" (around one in the morning), which is the current fashion. (It
also implies that some of these shows may be more "adult" in content).
Haunted Junction
Thursdays, 01:45
TV Tokyo

Three students one Buddhist, one Shinto, and one Christian
all attend a
school with an exceptionally abnormal amount of paranormal activity. These
three must first round up all the spirits that roam freely through the
school, creating panic and causing problems. After this task is finished,
the spirits of the school aid them in their quest to exorcise other spirits
that they encounter. The supporting cast of supernaturals includes a
ghostly principal, an animated skeleton, The Girl in the Mirror, and a giant
pair of feet. Although this show is supposed to be slightly "H" in nature
(hence its late-night airtime), so far there is little evidence of anything
that would be too distracting or disturbing.
Hyperpolice
Fridays, 01:15
TV Tokyo

Natsuki is a cat-woman who works for the Police Company in the future. Her
job is to capture wanted criminals; rather than being paid a salary, her pay
is based on each capture. So obviously, she goes after those criminals with
the highest bounties, which often prove to be the most dangerous. And, of
course, since Natsuki is essentially a rookie, she has her work cut out for
her, and often finds herself in over her head. As if this wasn't difficult
enough, she is paired with a partner that hates her. What's a catgirl to
do? Although this starts off a little slow, the first few episodes show
signs of both plot and character development. Fans of the manga will
definitely want to look into this series.
MAZE · Bakunetsu Jikuu
Thursdays, 01:15
TV Tokyo

What happens when Maze's house is transported to a world populated by
strange fantasy creatures and mecha? As if that wasn't weird enough, Maze
changes gender÷from a gentle female (voiced by Mitsuishi Kotono) to a
psychotic, oversexed male (by Seki Tomokazu). The pacing in this show seems
a little uneven, but there are a wide variety of jokes (including some
WIZARD OF OZ references in the first episode).
Miru is the female who
stumbles across Maze's house in the first episode and trouble soon follows.
How can Maze (in either form) hope to fight off the army of invaders who
have mechanized suits? He/she has one of his own. Another in the
late-night risque lineup from TV Tokyo, Maze is based on the manga by
Akahori Satoru.
Slayers Try
Fridays, 18:30
TV Tokyo

Lina, Gaury, Amelia, and Zelgardis are back again, in this, the third
SLAYERS television series. The humor picks up
right where SLAYERS NEXT left
off, complete with sight gags and bizarre takes on the fantasy world that
SLAYERS fans have come to know and love.
In the first couple of episodes,
the Slayers encounter a Shoujo dragon disguised as a woman with long blonde
hair and big blue eyes. And when she returns to her true dragon form, she
retains these rather non-reptilian features. And despite the fact that she
has a big pink ribbon tied to the end of her tail, she is still a force to
be reckoned with and gives Linna a run for her money. And have you ever
wondered what would happen if Lina cast her Drag Slave spell while at sea?
