SPIN OUT
by Nishimori Hiroyuki and Harukaze Santa

This issue presents the second installment of this new series drawn by KYOU KARA ORE WA!! author Nishimori Hiroyuki. The story's hero appears to be high school student Satsuki, a small but obnoxious kid who has a mysterious ability to render his opponents powerless. But some strange, dark spirit has targeted him for an unknown reason, and Satsuki and his new friend Makoto wind up teleporting to a vast and dangerous wilderness.
In this issue, Satsuki and Makoto, despite their sudden arrival in a strange new world, spend most of the pages getting on each others' nerves and complaining to each other. Occasionally they pause to do such useful things as finding fantastic monsters or—in Makoto's case—falling off a cliff. In the brief moments where Makoto thinks he's about to die as he begins to fall, Satsuki gets a glimpse of Makoto's good side. And when Satsuki leaps down to rescue him, Makoto also gets a glimpse of Satsuki's good side—along with his idiocy. Now the two of them are stuck dangling from the side of the cliff, with no obvious way to get to safety.
With only two episodes, it's hard to say how this manga will turn out. Unfortunately, so far everything has been fairly typical: slightly delinquent teenage heroes, a clueless but pretty heroine, travel to a magical world. Worse, the pacing in this second issue felt unusually slow and stilted. As usual, though, only time will tell, and SPIN OUT has enough humor to make the adventure interesting to read.

Selected Brief Updates:

INUYASHA
by Takahashi Rumiko

Overview: Kagome is a modern student teamed up with the strange boy Inuyasha in 15th or 16th century Japan, seeking to retrieve the fragments of the magical Shikon No Tama.
This issue: Inuyasha's unfortunate change into human form has coincided with a battle against a monstrous giant ex-human who eats people in an attempt to gain immortality. Inuyasha, though wounded, has just refused to drink of a magical healing broth made from human flesh. Now, he faces hopeless odds against the giant, especially with all his friends except Kagome shrunken down to a tiny size. Kagome, however, uses a special bow and arrow to dislodge the Shikon No Tama from the monster's body. Seizing the opportunity, Inuyasha leaps upon the monster and the two of them go hurtling out of the building and down a cliff....

ME GUMI NO DAIGO
by Soda Masahito

Overview: Asahina Daigo is a young firefighter with the "Me" Company, who has an unusual ability to find and rescue people in danger.
This issue: The companies called to an airport construction fire had thought the fire extinguished, but Gomi, in exploring, has found the hidden source of the fire. Now, protecting two injured workers, he finds himself trapped amidst deadly explosions. The rest of Gomi's company listens to his radio transmissions and watches in dismay as they see the dark smoke rise in the distance. One last explosion, and Gomi's radio goes silent. Now, Daigo suddenly faces the possibility that Gomi—his boss, his one-time savior, and his idea of the "one to beat"—might die. Unable to see a way to get to Gomi through the rubble, Daigo in desperation turns to his rival Amakasu and asks him to think of a way through.

This issue: Ignoring, for now, the growing controversy around her, Ai is playing her next match, this time against a cool-headed, emotionless, android-like opponent. As the wind picks up, it becomes clear that this guy can turn the wind into his own potent weapon, the "fangs of a wolf." For the first time in the match, he is smiling.
