HUNTER x HUNTER
by Togashi Yoshihiro
Started in #14, 1998 (5 volumes available)

Overview: Gon is a boy who dreamt of becoming a Hunter just like his father Ging. Now that he and his friends Clapika and Reolio passed the Qualifications Examination and became Hunters, the three visits Cookooroo Mountain to visit Kirua. Reolio and Clapika go their separate ways, while Gon and Kirua start climbing the Heavenly Arena, where people fight for money. They arrive at the 200th floor, but something is different than before—they have to find a way to get to registration before they become disqualifed? Wing, a mysterious "mentor" of sorts, pulls the two boys aside to give them basic survival knowledge.
This Issue—No.048: Hisoka's Conditions - Wing explains to the boys that nen is something everyone has, but something only a few can control. Kirua asks for a way to learn the way to control nen before midnight. Wing replies that he will then send the boys some of his energy, but it's up to them to find a way to retain their own energy that will spurt out as a result. Gon and Kirua are surprised as their own energies start escaping like steam out of a boiling kettle. Wing, on the other hand, becomes surprised that one piece of advice gets the boys to control their own energies. A few minutes later, the two boys confront Hisoka again. Hisoka laughs that he still has no wish to fight Gon; but if Gon can win once in the 200+ level, then Hisoka will agree to fight him.

MEIRYOUTEI GOTO SEIJUROU
by Kazu Hajime
Started in #52, 1997 (6 volumes available)

Overview: Goto Seijurou is the reckless, violent student body president of Meiryou High School. He is so feared that his nickname is Meiryoutei ("Emperor of Meiryou"). What will Seiji do now, as Eiji, the last of the Four Kings of Meiryou (the four most problematic students after Seiji), has taken Kasumi captive?
This Issue—Ballot 68: Reason to Fight - The door to the room where Kasumi and Eiji are is kicked open, and a bear enters. Eiji laughs as Kasumi shows a semblance of emotion, saying that both Seijurou and Kasumi were silly in that they thought too much about each other. Seiji takes the bear-head off and asks Eiji what the real reason behind all of this was. Eiji swings for a kick; Seijurou braces but sidesteps when advised so by Kasumi. Eiji smiles, saying that the next time Seiji sidesteps, the kick is going towards Kasumi. Seijurou asks Kasumi to get ready for a huge dinner because someone relying only on strength can never crush him. A few kicks later, Seiji asks Eiji who he is really fighting—Eiji remembers the reason for crossdressing and to dominate over guys was because of the trauma from his childhood when he was physically abused by his father. Seiji tells Eiji to go his own way, that the one thing he learned from his own (physically abused) childhood was to plow through with what he wanted to do. Eiji apologizes, and thus everything was well again (except for Takumi not realizing that Eiji was a guy).

ONE PIECE
by Oda Eiichiro
Started in #34, 1997 (8 volumes available)

Overview: Monkey D. Ruffy is a boy set out to sail the Grand Line, find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the king of pirates. His small crew includes swordsman Roronoa Zorro, gunner "Captain" Usopp and chef Sanji. The four teens face the merman crew headed by Arlong in hopes of setting their cartographer Nami free from her past. Will Ruffy be able to reunite his whole crew and finally set sail on the Grand Line?
This Issue—Episode 86: Chivalry Vs Merman Karate - Sanji stops Zorro from diving down to save Ruffy and dives into the water instead. He sees that Gen and Nojiko are trying to save Ruffy by pulling his neck out of water. Kuroobi, the merman who dove after Sanji, finds the effort to save Ruffy. He tries to stop Gen, but Sanji insists on a fight. While Sanji's kicks become basically worthless underwater, Kuroobi's attacks gain strength. Kuroobi laughs that Sanji's chivalry can't save any of the people of Cocoyashi, and attempts to make Sanji implode from sudden differences in water pressure. Sanji withstands the attack and fights back by breathing air into Kuroobi's gill, which gives him enough time to get back onto dry land. Once on dry land, Kuroobi is no match for Sanji's set of vicious kicks.
