Anime Expo 1999 (continued)

Panels

Panels offer the opportunity for industry companies to take the platform and talk about the way they do business and what recent transactions and acquisitions have happened. Here's a short list of items of interest announced at AX.

Panel programming was diverse and well-attended.

Pioneer revealed the following:

  • Acquired the rights to AKIRA, re-released on VHS and DVD somewhere between 2000-2001 with a new dub.
  • Both SOL BIANCA: THE LEGACY and the ARMITAGE III sequel are being co-produced by Pioneer LDCA. The new SOL BIANCA will be released in America in conjunction with the Japanese release this winter.
  • DVD boxes for EL HAZARD and FUSHIGI YUGI are expected by the end of the year.
Manga Entertainment announced:
  • They do, in fact, have the rights to the EVANGELION movies (DEATH & REBIRTH, END OF EVANGELION). Formats and releases will be determined later.
  • The theatrical release of PERFECT BLUE (1997) will finally see a limited run during the month of August in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
AnimeVillage.com announced:
  • They are co-producing the ESCAFLOWNE movie with Japan, and it should see a simultaneous release in the year 2000.
  • COWBOY BEBOP and OUTLAW STAR will be released on DVD in the future.
  • Ken Iyadomi let it slip that SABER MARIONETTE J TO X is on the way.
A.D.V. Films announced:
  • They have the rights to three new titles to add to their already large library: SORCEROUS STABBER ORPHEN, SHIN GETTER ROBO, and the live action PARASITE EVE movie.
And AnimEigo announced:
  • Through creative negotiations with Harmony Gold, they have acquired the subtitled rights to the television series SUPER DIMENSIONAL FORTRESS: MACROSS. A limited VHS and DVD box set is planned.
Panels featuring the Guests of Honor were also immensely popular, allowing attendees to peek into the minds that have created their favorite works. Each Guest of Honor had a panel that focused on their works, and many Guests also did panels with other guests about topics such as character design. For more details, see the panel summaries in this and the next issue of EX.
Taking advantage of internet technology, AX 99 saw the introduction of the first official AX Web-cast. Set up to broadcast events in Main Programming, the Web-cast also ran a concurrent IRC chat room for those who could not make it to AX 99 but could still watch in on the Web.
