Vol. 3 "Beast Girl Ready to Pounce"
by Charles McCarter
Followup to the previous
review in EX 4.6:
AnimeVillage.com (aka Bandai Entertainment) continues its
release of OUTLAW STAR, and with this
volume, a new character joins the already bizarre crew.
The alien Aisha, from the Ctarl-Ctarl empire, is after
Gene after what happened in a previous episode. She's sworn an
oath of revenge and has vowed to track him to the end of the
Universe if that's what it takes. There's only one
problemthat costs money! Aisha, already infuriated by
Gene, is forced to take menial jobs to survive. This leads to a
lot of interestingand often very funnysituations.
Aisha is voiced by the ever-popular Miyamura Yuuko
(EVANGELION's Asuka), and she brings
the character to life with her off-the-wall and over the top
performances. No one knows what Aisha's going to do next, and
as long as you're not part of the crew of the Outlaw Star,
that's what makes her so much fun.
Viewers finally get to see the result of all the work
Gene and Jim have done in outfitting the Outlaw Star, and
will begin to learn a little about Melfina and the mysteries that
surround her creation. Gene, in true gallant fashion, vows to
help her discover how and why she was created. Certainly this is
a plot thread that will be revisited in later volumes.
And if that wasn't enough, Gene helps his "friend" out
of a jam by protecting him from an assassin. And it turns out
thatyep, she's a beautiful woman. What's Gene to do?
The animation and pacing continue on the same track as
they were in the first two volumes, and the show is a lot of fun
to watch. COWBOY BEBOP may be Bandai's
flagship title right now, but OUTLAW STAR
comes in a close second.
