MONTHLY AFTERNOON
cover
November Issue, 1999
Published by Kodansha
Selected Brief Updates by Rika Takahashi

Not all manga anthologies in Japan are weeklies like JUMP and SUNDAY. In fact, a majority of publications are actually published only once a month—and virtually every publisher in Japan has some form of a monthly anthology for boys and one for girls. EX will periodically cover approximately half of a random issue of a random magazine every so often; but these synopses, unlike the ones for JUMP and SUNDAY, will not be a regular column.
This issue's pick, AFTERNOON, is one of the most popular phonebooks that is targeted at a more mature audience. With over 30 titles totaling over 800 pages each month, it is one of the most packed magazines in Japan. It is also the home of the Japanese versions of a few popular titles in the United States.

SPACE FAMILY CARLVINSON
by Asari Yoshitoh

Overview: The popular series from the late SHONEN CAPTAIN was picked up by AFTERNOON (Kodansha has released the compilations from the CAPTAIN days for the new readers, too)...and the bizarre theatrical troop and their human "child" are still as wacky as ever.
This issue: Corona is looking forward to the athletic festival. "Mom" tells her that she will have lunch ready, but "Dad" accidentally made all the rice into sushi (vinegared) rice. "Mom" decides to cook more rice because she promised onigiri (rice-balls) while Taa-kun is assigned to eat all the sushi rice. Each successive attempt to make onigiri fails, and each time, Taa-kun is forced to eat every bit of the failure. At the athletic festival the next day, Corona eats happily while Taa-kun feels ill from eating all that rice...but "Mom" tells Taa-kun that he's running the bread-eating race in the afternoon.

YOKOHAMA KAIDASHI KIKOU
by Ashinano Hitoshi

Overview: Alpha is a robot that runs a small café near what used to be Yokohama in the future where global warming has put much of the world underwater. But a recent violent storm blew away the café portion of Alpha's house! What will she do?
This issue: Alpha sets up temporary shop outdoors next to the housing section. The gas store guy asks her what she's going to do now, and Alpha replies that she is going to go out into the world and wander about a bit to enlarge the area that she can call "home"...and that she will depart in the next few days.

AH! MEGAMI-SAMA
by Fujishima Kousuke

Overview: In the newest Japanese story arc of this American fan favorite, Keiichi and the trio of goddesses are having a problem lifting the curse that the demon Velsper cast on the goddess Peiorth. The group decides to ask the leader of the Underworld to help; and out came Urd's mom!
This issue: Hildo appears at the Morisato residence in something similar to a tornado. She listens to what Peiorth has to say, and offers to turn the little goddess back to normal size—if Urd comes back to the Underworld with her. Urd apologizes to Peiorth, saying that she can't accept the conditions.

HOUSHIN EXAXXION
by Sonoda Kenichi

Overview: The Leofaads are on the revenge path against Exaxxion. They decide to lace Akane's body with micromachines to force a hostile takeover of the system. While half of Isaka forcefully transports Houichi back to the lab where his grandfather awaits, the other half of Isaka tries to fight the machines in Akane's body...
This issue: Isaka's mental half synchronizes into Akane's body, and the two of them see their memories from the other's perspective. Akane realizes that Isaka is an android created to help Houichi, and Isaka's antivirus program works to regain control of Akane's body. Meanwhile, the physical half of Isaka arrives back at the lab, and Houichi points his gun at his happy grandfather.

KAMI-KAZE
by Shiki Satoshi

Overview: Kaede's group manages to lead Misawo into the land of the "water people." There, Misawo meets her grandmother...
This issue: Misawo asks her grandmother why the "kegai no tami" were born with their special powers. In reply, Misawo's grandmother asserts that the 88 Beasts (that Misawo was led to believe were evil) were just another set of creatures born onto this earth with a certain set of characteristics. The battle between the "kegai no tami" and the Beasts was a war for survival because one couldn't live in the presence of the other, and the "kegai no tami" can still be considered human in the war for survival against the Beasts. She continues that Misawo's current enemies are those that don't think that way, and notes that the internal strife between the various "kegai no tami" was the Beasts' last resort for their survival. The grandmother tells her granddaughter to believe in her powers and that of Kamuro's, when Kaede beheads her with her wind powers. While Kaede fights Misawo, a Beast attacks the group...
