Everyone is rushing to gather together their holiday gifts for
friends and family, or hustling to plan their millennium
partiesor even scrambling to turn in articles at the last
minute. Yes, for some reason, despite this whirlwind of activity
that surrounds the holiday season, I find myself feeling
unusually calm.
Maybe that's because I've got all
of my Christmas shopping done. Maybe it's because I did most of
it online. Maybe it's because I realize that another year has
come and gone, and we've survived it allgood and bad. (And
I'm not just talking about anime here). Or maybe it's because I'm
writing yet another holiday editorial. Or maybe it's because I
haven't read Scott's latest BEYOND TV SAFETY
yet.
Whatever the reason, I feel like
celebrating this holiday season (a good thing too, since this is
the time of year for such expected celebrations).
No doubt, someone will ask me about
the title for this editorial. No, it's not the amount of time we
spend working on EX (at least, not usually).
Sometimes, though I do think it's the amount of time it takes me to
type out one of these pithy little editorials, though.
I don't talk about it much, but each
issue of EX takes a lot of time to put
together. The writing, editing, and HTML
production all require a considerable amount of time, especially if
we are to live up to the standards that our readers have come to
expect of us.
"Some folks say there's a price
on love. Watch your freedom go." And maybe that's true, at least
to a certain extent, since we all give up time to work on EX. Time that is taken away from other things, most
often other hobbies or things that would fall into the category of
"free time" or "social life."
But whenever I start to feel like EX is taking away too much of my precious free time,
I flip through the past issues and realize what we've built. Looking
back over 1999, EX has managed to do a lot of
great things. We managed to obtain a number of great interviews this
year: the multitalented and always amusing Kanno Yoko,
the artistic genius Kawamoto
Toshihiro (and the cover of EX 4.5 will always have a special place in my
heart), the laid-back but keenly intellectual Izubuchi Yutaka,
and the enigmatic and artistic Amano Yoshitaka.
It has truly been a banner year for us here at EX,
and we are left wondering what the year 2000 holds.
I am extremely proud to say that EX is still a leading resource for anime and manga.
And not just for sound bytes. For in-depth interviews, articles on
great new shows, and articles exploring the growth and changes in the
industry both in Japan and America. And for those of you who read the
Japanese magazines, check out the December issue of Sony's AX magazine (no relation to Anime Expo) for
an article on, well,
us.
I'd like to take a moment to thank
everyone who has made EX a success. That
means the staff, who put in long hours and lots of last-minute work to
get everything ready to go online. It also means the readers as well,
who keep coming back to see what's new, to encourage us, and to give
us ideas to help us continue to be the best we can possibly be.
Look for some changes in the near
future, but nothing too radical. We'll try and make the site more
inventive and informative.

clock. Twenty four seven... Never want it to stop...".

P.S. - I've got a special prize for the first
person who can tell me where the title and quotes for this article came
from. Here's a hint: It has nothing to do with anime. E-mail me at phoenix@apricot.com if you think
you know. |
