After showing Leary and Manson how to use the controllers
to play BUST A MOVE, I turned back to
Kero-chan and Jim. |
I hope this is fast! Not only am I worried about all
of you weirdos being near me, I'm worried that none of the younger
people reading my account of this experience will know who these
icons of the 60's counterculture are. |
How could anybody forget the 60's? |
You'd be amazed at the vast number of Baby Boomers who act
as if they had never lived through it. AnywaySome of your
predictions for last year were totally off. |
No they weren't. |
Yes they were! You said that the first simultaneous release
of an OVA in the U.S.
and Japan would happen in '99. |
There were some that were really close. |
That doesn't count! You also said that Bruce Campbell
would chainsaw Steve Bennett in half at Project A-kon. I didn't
hear about that and I saw Steve at Nan Desu Kon and he was still
in one piece. |
You didn't pull up his shirt and look for stitches did you? |
Well, no... |
Then how can you be sure that they didn't sew him back
together? We didn't say he died. |
OK. OK. You
also said we'd see the return of the bunnygirl costume. I waited
all year and didn't see any more bunnygirls than usual. |
I always liked bunnygirls too. They're important bridges
between the Semantic and Socio-Sexual Circuits. |
You didn't do much traveling this year did you? You just
weren't in the right places to see it happen. We never said it
would be in Japan after all. |
How about this one: 'An OVA series
called BOO-BOO RUBBER PANIC will be the #1
video of the year.' I waited all year long and it never came out.
I did see flyers advertising it at Anime Central, got a poster for
it and have even seen fan art but so far no tapes or DVDs. What gives? |
OK, so maybe we got the wrong year with that one. It still
hasn't hit the mainstream yet. It will hit big in 2000 and wherever
you go, BOO-BOO RUBBER PANIC will
be there. |
OK, Kero-chan, I know that CARD CAPTOR SAKURA is coming out on TV in the U.S. in 2000.
What's it like? |
Well... Let's just say you won't see me again next year. |
What?! You become so hated that you can't show your face? |
The opposite. SAKURA becomes so
popular that it even eclipses SAILOR MOON in
some places. Which is, of course, due in large part to my excellent
performances! My spirit becomes spread so thin that I can't appear
in any one place. |
Wow, so what about the quality of the show? Is is good? Do
they change it much? |
Oh, they change plenty. Thing is, even though the changes
anger the fans, they make it more popular to the mainstream
audience. Nelvana chooses the many over the few. |
Probably makes a lot of sense for their back account. |
DVD continues its boom and we
finally see the death of LD. It just kind
of fades away and when nobody is looking, it gurgles its last
gurgling breath. |
That's not a very pleasant image. |
What is pleasant is that the prices of anime DVDs go down a little and availability
increases dramatically. |
Will any of the Studio Ghibli films come out on DVD in 2000? |
No. Look for that in late 2001 when everything else that
will ever be available on DVD is. |
I'm tired of playing Hiro-kun. I want to try Shorty. |
Come on, man! I'm just getting good with Shorty. |
You already know her high scorin' moves. Time to switch! |
Ok... I'll be Strike then. |
No, please! Nothing where he gets guns! |
Why don't you play Heat then. You can burn things. |
Groovy. |
Wonderful. |
Anime con attendance booms again in 2000. |
Anime Expo 99 hit like 6100 people. It was very impressive! |
I was there. |
You were not there! |
Yes, I was I was in costume so nobody knew. |
What was your costume? |
I was Asuka from EVANGELION. |
What?! |
Here, look. |
