MEIRYOUTEI GOTO SEIJUROU
by Kazu Hajime
Started in #52, 1997 (9 volumes available)

Overview: Goto Seijurou has been the reckless student body president of Meiryou High School. His abusive behavior is known wide in and out of school, and has given him the nickname Meiryoutei (Emperor of Meiryou). He had led his council (Cliff, Kasumi, Hayata, and Rihei), his Four Kings (Takumi, Munenaga, Kiichi, and Eiji, the four most troublesome students of Meiryou HS after Seijurou), and the council's pet dog Niku through many a laugh as well as troublesome affairs... but his friends knew that no matter how reckless Seiji's behavior was, it always ended up (for one strange reason or another) for the best.
Now, the series ends—exactly two years after it started—but this ending is surely not a definite ending. Seiji doesn't mend his ways (even after the whole ordeal of a possible recall by the Nijou siblings), Cliff is still masochistic with his snide comments to Seiji, and the whole group is just one rowdy bunch. Hayata sums it up nicely in the closing pages—that the council has no days of calm, and a big hubbub is part of the day's work... but though all of the rowdiness, they learn new things and grow up—because he had been, and he will continue to. Perhaps this is a fitting end for such a wild group—Kazu herself has mentioned on her personal website that the group from Meiryou High School will continue to live on forever although this is the last episode of MEIRYOUTEI in JUMP... and that she is confident that she will be able to draw more about them in the future.
This Issue—Ballot 95. (final) A Big Hubbub - Cliff asks Hayata if he has seen Niku, but Hayata shakes his head. The two wonder if Seiji really went through and ate the dog... but upon asking Seiji, the president gets upset that someone else had eaten the dog before he did. While Hayata looks around town for Niku, he spots a boy being lynched by two others for money. Hayata interrupts the scene, and the two punks turn to Hayata—when Seiji appears, asking why Hayata wasn't looking for Niku... and proceeds to beat the punks up. Seiji runs to the huddled boy, who cries that death is his only escape. Hayata sees an image of his old self (from episode 1), and tells the boy (without realizing that the rest of the council was eavesdropping) that he will be all right—that because he knows what pain is, he can be strong. In return, the boy tells the council that he has seen Niku—the council goes to where the boy said, and find out that Niku is courting a gigantic bulldog. On the way back, Seiji mentions to Hayata that he has gotten much stronger from when they met—because strength was more a mindset than mere physical prowess.

ONE PIECE
by Oda Eiichiro
Started in #34, 1997 (11 volumes available)

Overview: Monkey D. Luffy is a boy set out to sail the Grand Line, find the legendary treasure One Piece, and become the king of pirates. His small crew consists of swordsman Roronoa Zorro, navigator/cartographer Nami, gunner "Captain" Usopp, and chef Sanji. The five after an eventful stop at Logue Town manage to get themselves on the Grand Line, a navigational route where anything can happen. At Whiskey Peak, the group gets blacklisted by Baroque Works, a shady bunch of bounty-hunters led by Crocodile (who is one of the 7 great pirates of the world). As if that wasn't enough, they are asked to escort Nefeltari Vivi (formerly known as Miss Wednesday), princess of Alabasta, back to her home country...
This Issue—Episode 114. Route - Luffy grabs Sanji and Usopp, and drags them across town into their ship. Zorro raises the anchor while Nami and Vivi (and her bird) enter the boat. They set sail, much to the dismay of Usopp and Sanji (who slept through the whole ordeal)... but a mysterious woman laughs at them from the second floor. This woman, Miss All-Sunday, is the partner for Crocodile and also was the one who just blew up Igaram (Mr.8)'s ship. Luffy's crew prepares to fight, but are no match for her mysterious telekinetic (read: Devil Nut-related) powers. She tells them that they cannot possibly survive their next destination, and hands them an Eternal Pose (a compass that doesn't run out of gas like the Log Pose) for an island next to Alabasta. Luffy crushes the Eternal Pose, telling All-Sunday that she is not the one that determines their destination. All-Sunday leaves, and the group head for their next destination—Little Garden, where wild animals roam around... huge footprints!?

I"S
by Katsura Masakazu
Started in #19, 1997 (12 volumes available)

Overview: This is a story about Seto Ichitaka and his love life. Now that Ichitaka and his long-time crush Iori have realized their feelings for each other, he thought things would go smoothly from then on. However, Iori starts having less time for dates as she gets more popular as an idol. Ichitaka spends his idle time complaining to his neighbor, who is also in a long-distance relationship. Iori starts to feel as if the relationship isn't working out...
This Issue—Episode 122. Those Feelings from Back Then - A bad feeling falls on Ichitaka. Thoughts of happy days with Iori race through his mind... and how he was at the same place last Christmas, but it felt so much different when a realtionship was starting and not ending. Iori finally opens up and confesses that her acting hasn't been all fun, that she felt she was at a bind and wanted to quit... but she had relied on him to support her for all this time. Iori continues that she didn't want to hurt Ichitaka anymore, so she wanted to break up. The scene flies a few months to October, where we see a happy Ichitaka and Iori eating a meal together. What happened after Iori's comment was—Ichitaka asked if she no longer loved him. Iori shook her head. Ichitaka apologized for everything he's said to trouble her, and that he still loves her so he wanted another chance... and Iori cried because she was glad he didn't hate her. And since then, Iori has stopped by in the mornings to eat breakfast with him when she was free until the afternoon... and Ichitaka felt that they would be all right, as long as they remembered the fear and relief they felt about each other that one night.

HOUSHIN ENGI
by Fujisaki Ryu, based on the translation by Anou Tsutomu
Started in #28, 1996 (17 volumes available)

Overview: Taikoubou is a sennin (a wizard of sorts) sent on a mission to seal away the souls of the evil temptress Datsuki and her henchmen because she is ruining the land of Chouka by controlling its emperor. This project, called the Houshin Project, is more than meets the eye—but the project is slowly nearing completion. Taikoubou's Paopei (magical weapon of sorts), the Dashinben, gets an upgrade; but when he rejoins his troops in the final fight against Chouka, a "modified" version of Chuuou, the king, was waiting along with Datsuki and her sisters.
This Issue—Episode 163. Battle of the Pastures (4) ~ Prince Chuuou - The armies are in awe as they see their king (who is supposedly over 40 years old now) as... a sobbing child. The next moment, the sadness of making their king cry turns to fear as Chuuou declares the death sentence on every soldier, and attacks. Datsuki claims that the king now has the "lost power of the ying", and sits down to rest. Youzen tells Taikoubou to rest as well, while Sengyoku, Igo, and Raishinshi attack Chuuou... to no avail. Nataku and Youzen prepare to attack, while Tenka sits down next to Taikoubou to rest for a while as well.
