Just when you thought the nightmare was over, the horror is back! RESIDENT EVIL 3, the latest installment of the popular third-person, blast-the-zombies-and-monsters-away game, appears yet again to delightfully scare video gamers with even more monsters. Known as BIOHAZARD: THE LAST ESCAPE in Japan, the story takes up where RESIDENT EVIL 1 left off and focuses on Jill Valentine, the heroine of the original game.
Jill has quit S.T.A.R.S. because of Umbrella's horrific experiments which have gone awry as the G-Virus has made its way into the Raccoon City proper. Citizens of Raccoon City have been infected with the virus and flesh-eating zombies have taken over the city in swarms. No one is safe, but Jill is determined to escape from Raccoon City at all costs!
As Jill, the player faces a lot of obstacles, but none that aren't already familiar like the usual zombies, zombie dogs, and spiders. With a new game, though, there are more new monsters, such as new types of Hunters that can take your head off in one swipe or giant monster grubs. With the help of the usual guns and weapons, the player can assist Jill in fighting her way through the monsters and out to somewhere sane.
Jill isn't alone in her last escape, for there are others who are also trying to get out of Raccoon City alive. Carlos Olveira, a mercenary for hire from Umbrella, is also trying to escape and with his help, Jill might make it out alive. Unlike the second game, RESIDENT EVIL 3 only gives the player one choice of character instead of two like the last two games.
The player can choose from two levels of play, Easy Mode or Hard Mode, which will determine the amount of ammo and weapons Jill starts out with at the beginning of the game. If you are not accustomed to the RESIDENT EVIL games, you should try the Easy Mode first then, try the Hard Mode. New features in RESIDENT EVIL 3 improve the gameplay and suspense quite a bit. There are certain decision points in the game where the screen will freeze and the player will have to choose from two options on how to make Jill react. Depending on how the player chooses will decide Jill's fate in the game.
The other new thing is that not only are there zombies after Jill, but a nasty Tyrant-type creature called Nemesis. Tyrant is the name of the final boss in the first game and is a bio-weapon created by Umbrella. Nemesis was also created by Umbrella with one purpose, to destroy all the S.T.A.R.S. members—and that includes Jill. Nemesis likes to chase, beat up, and eventually kill Jill when he finds her. Avoid Nemesis at all costs, but fight him when there is no other choice. It is possible to kill him temporarily, but like any good boss monster, he recovers quickly, so watch out!
Nemesis appeared as a trench coat and chased Leon and Claire around as the 2nd scenario in the RESIDENT EVIL 2 game. Nemesis looks like the Chatterer Cynobite from HELLRAISER and the only thing he says is "STARS!" He even comes with his own theme music so you know when he's around hunting you. The timeline of RESIDENT EVIL 2 and 3 intersect as the RESIDENT EVIL 3 time happens several days before the RESIDENT EVIL 2 starts.
Overall, the RESIDENT EVIL 3 game is quite a treat for those RESIDENT EVIL fans sporting a new horrific soundtrack and new backgrounds for the player to experience. The game has an added bonus where the player can play another game called THE MERCENARIES where the player can choose one of three of the Umbrella mercenaries in a shoot 'em up game of survival. An enjoyable game overall, RESIDENT EVIL 3 does not dissapoint!
