Humanity is more prosperous in this series than in other Space Westerns, with mankind settled throughout what seems to be the bulk of the galaxy. We again have the isolated planets being their own governing bodies. While the worlds and the towns may be high-tech and not very reminiscent of the West, here, the sheer vastness of Space is the boundary, the unending frontier. The strongest band together and form pirate clans—spaceships the size of cities exact a toll like any pirate traveling the seven seas. They engage in smuggling, drugs, and all sorts of other illicit activities. And of course, the police are too hampered by manpower limitations and the vastness of space to be effective deterrents.
Then, there are the outlaws—the cowboys of this series, who live on the fringe of society. They make a living by doing whatever they can, living by their own rules. They are neither part of governed space nor part of a pirate clan. They take the odd jobs such as bounty hunting, smuggling, or other unsavory tasks. It's a rough existence, but Outlaws take a certain sense of pride in that what they're doing is not easy. They are the people finding a new existence on this edge of where life can manage to find a foothold.
