And now we come to TRIGUN, the most obviously
Western feeling of the bunch and curiously the one involving
seemingly the least space travel, although that is up to some debate. In
TRIGUN the world is drawn to look very much like a
version of the wild west. Restaurants are called saloons, and outside of each
town is a desert wasteland. There is a very strong cowboy theme running through
everything. Mixed in with this are anachronistic bits of high tech, such as
mutant-like humans that can be up to 20 feet tall. However,
even these seeming non-sequiturs fit into the environment as if they were always
there, such is the way of the West with its anarchistic environs. Every now and
then in the series we come across bits of extremely high tech referred to as "lost
technology."
Due
to the way humanity came to exist on this planet they have lost the high
technology that gave them the ability to get here across the huge expanse of
space. Now they are stranded on this desert planet without enough power,
ability or people to wrest a better living from the planet. Virtually
everyone lives in little cities or towns usually clustered around what water
can be found or near some debris from the SEEDS ships
that brought them to this barren planet. This lends the perfect background for
a Western-style setting. The thugs use what weapons they have to feed off of
those foolish enough to venture into the wasteland without sufficient
protection.
Only
one man seems to have a link to the past from before humanity was lost to
this desert planet: Vash the Stampede,
The Humanoid Typhoon. He plays the role of the gunman who in his heart tries
to do good, but events transpire to put him and those around him in to the
worst situations. That is how he earned the $$60
billion reward (in double-dollars) on his head.
They
do have technology here and there. Enough for them to be able to create
people that are super strong, super fast, 20 feet tall with
a rocket punch fist on a cable. One thing humanity has managed to do on
this hard planet is diversify. From dress to form and size. However even
with all these bodily modifications and enhancements this form of technology
pales compared to what the lost technology was capable
of. We eventually learn that this technology is more non-conventional than
we may have originally thought. This is brought home the first time we see a
Plant overloading and how Vash deals with it in the manga.
