With a wave of her card captor wand, Sakura captures The Earthy, the last of the Clow Cards and is
judged by the serious Yue. Thus ends the first
season of CARD CAPTOR SAKURA, 46 episodes total,
called the Clow Card Series since it covered Sakura's initial capture of the magical cards
created by the sorcerer Clow Reed.
The new series, Sakura Card Series, spins a different tale that introduces new
characters as well as presenting Sakura with the problem that the Clow Cards are no longer responding to
her incantations. Sakura's aim in this series is to find out what her newfound power is and to convert
the Clow Cards into ones of her own making: Sakura Cards.
Sakura returns to a new school year with Li and Tomoyo, and there is a new transfer student
from England, Hiragiizawa Eriol, who takes an interest in Sakura. Sakura is also interested in Eriol's
kindness, and this makes Li Shaoran, a relative of Clow, jealous because of Eriol's advances. Eriol
means well, or does he? Li is not so sure about that, and odd occurrences have been happening around
the neighborhood that smell of the magic of Clow Reed himself. Another new transfer student, Akizuki
Nakuru, is a rather energetic girl who always seems to show up at the wrong times and she hangs onto
Touya as a girlfriend would to her boyfriend. Nakuru is another mysterious person, and nothing much is
known of her. Touya doesn't like her, but Nakuru seems to always want to hang around with him. Yukito
also seems to be affected by Nakuru's presence, but he doesn't know why.
Kero-chan tells Sakura that she must enhance her own power by converting the Clow Cards with
her new card magic. Using a new wand, Sakura's power over the Clow Cards is non-existent, so she must
believe in herself before she can use them effectively. The strange happenings seem to be increasing,
and they tax poor Sakura to the brink of exhaustion. The conversion of Clow Cards to Sakura Cards drains
her energy, and she must rest before battling the curious forces that seem to test her.
This new Sakura Card series has changed its focus from capturing cards to Sakura's real
story as it unfolds before her eyes. Sakura starts to grow up into a very mature young girl, as well as
finding out more about her true background. I enjoyed the change of pace of the story as characters like
Li-kun alters their feelings about Sakura. The new characters are a nice addition as well, since the
Clow Card series began to get repetitive after a while.
The Sakura Card series retains the same art and animation quality of the Clow Card
series, as well as introducing more new music. The mysteriously kind Eriol, played by Sasaki Nozomu (Ushio
in USHIO & TORA and Yuusuke in YUU YUU HAKUSHO), and Spinel
Sun, Kerberos' counterpart, played by Touma Yumi (Yui in FUSHIGI YUUGI) are both
voiced exceptionally well by these veteran voice actors.
All in all, a lot of surprises are in store for Sakura in this new series as she discovers more
about herself and her powers. Set to run for another 24 episodes, the last
LD volume (Volume 18) will be released on May
25. The anime series follows the manga series very closely as far as the main
story, and it will be enjoyable for all CARD CAPTOR SAKURA
fans.
