The first alternate story to bear the "Gundam" name was MOBILE FIGHTER G
GUNDAM, in which each country sent a Gundam to represent their nation in a
worldwide fighting match for global domination. Fans of the original balked
at some of the mecha designs, which included some bizarre contraptions such
as the Windmill Gundam and the Sailor Suit Gundam. And the concept of
street-fighting Gundams was hard to swallow for those who associated the
name "Gundam" with gritty military combat.
But with none other than GIANT ROBO's Imagawa Yasuhiro lending his shining
touch, the story packed plenty of punch, melodrama, and attitude, and soon
evolved into far more than a routine fight-of-the-week. By the end of its
broadcast, this "Un-Cola" of Gundam had won plenty of converts. And in
breaking all the rules, G GUNDAM allowed future creators far more creative
freedom, allowing the next spin-off to spread its wings.
