In ENDLESS WALTZ, Katoki was given carte blanche to redesign the Gundams for the video sequel. Though Katoki is best known for balancing realism with style, here he goes completely wild—taking Okawara's workmanship-like designs, he converts them into awesome and fear-inspiring harbingers of death. The redesigned Wing Gundam Zero Custom and Deathscythe Hell deserve special attention—the former now sports real wings (with feathers!) and looks like a true angel of death, while the latter literally looks like a bat out of Hell.

As for the rest of the Gundam team, the Sandrock sports a desert nomad cloak and oversized sickles, and the Alto-long's Dragon Fangs are now mounted on separate cables. The Heavy Arms receives the least changes, consisting mostly of a new color scheme and a beefed-up arsenal, but fans of Trowa will enjoy the fact that his mobile suit now sports his trademark clown mask! In addition, the Gundams are given a new opponent in the "thirteenth zodiac" mobile suit, the Serpent, whose beefy appearance makes it look imposing despite the lack of a "face".
If you favor the OVA designs over those shown on TV, you'll be glad to know that "they've always looked that way"—the designs are meant to be completely retroactive. While the original designs aren't half bad, they don't hold a candle to Katoki's flamboyant makeovers. All in all, the redesigned Gundams are among Katoki's most stunning designs to date. It makes one wish that he had designed the Gundams for the TV show in the first place.
