No, I'm not going to start spouting things like "Flame on!" or "It's
Clobberin' Time!" Although, come to think of it, now maybe I should...
But the title refers not to the U.S.'s premier
super hero team created so long ago, but to a phenomenon that is
considerably much more recent, but still quite an accomplishment.
This month (well, last month actually) marked another milestone for
us here at EX. Four years ago, we published our
first issue.
Now, with four years behind us, we're still moving forward
and breaking new ground...
I'm especially proud of our newest issue because of its cover.
It's an illustration drawn especially for EX by
Kawamoto Toshihiro, whom you may remember from the interview we did last
year. If not, be prepared for a refresher course, because this issue we
have the report of our trip to BONES, where Mr.
Kawamoto works as a character designer, illustrator, and animator.
The cover represents a milestone for us. Four years of hard
work. Four years of building a reputation. Four years of moving forward.
Four years of waiting to put a Welsh Corgi on the cover. (OK, maybe not
but...)
We've also got another surprise in the wings. As many of you
know, we tend to make an appearance at Anime Expo to get the latest info
on the convention and interview as many of the Guests of Honor that we
can. We also always give a panel, where people are encouraged to bring
overripe fruit and throw it at us, or at least come and ask us
interesting questions. And this year, we'll have a new product to sell...
With the generous cooperation of the amazing artist, illustrator
and designer Amano Yoshitaka, EX is proud to present
its first ever print publication: A sixteen-month 2001
calendar. Mr. Amano graciously donated the art for us to use in this
calendar; the proceeds from the EX Calendar will
go to the City of Hope Heroes for Hope Program, a worthy cause if ever
there was one.
The calendar features eight illustrations from Mr. Amano's
fantastic works, including art from VAMPIRE HUNTER D,
the FINAL FANTASY series, GATCHAMAN,
and his latest work, the epic HERO, which will culminate
in a full-length 3D computer-animated film.
The calendar will be on sale at our booth at Anime Expo, so stop
by and pick one up. After all, it's your chance to get some great art and
help a worthy cause. And, if you can't make it to AX,
you can order it from us online. Diamond Comics is distributing the
calendar for us to fine comic and specialty shops across the country, so
check your local comic shop starting in July. But those of you at
AX will get it first! Check out our
calendar page for more information!
And there are more things to look forward to in the months ahead.
Next Month, you'll be treated to an interview with the players of
GONZO Studios, the people who continue to work on the
cutting edge of anime with such titles as BLUE SUBMARINE NO.
6 and GATEKEEPERS. And who knows what other
surprises will lie in store in the issues ahead?
Well, I do. But that would be telling. You're just going to have
to wait and see. But I promise you an interesting ride, so strap yourselves
in and be ready for anything!
It's Clobberin' Time! (Sorry, I just had to say it...)
Ex animo,
