What is JUMP?
WEEKLY JUMP, rival publication of WEEKLY SHONEN SUNDAY, is a "phone book" anthology published every week, with a circulation over 4 million. It is filled with some of today's hottest titles targeted for school age boys, many of them familiar to anime fans. JUMP has among its esteemed alumni: DRAGON BALL, VIDEO GIRL AI, CITY HUNTER, FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD, SAINT SEIYA, SLAM DUNK, and YUU YUU HAKUSHO / POLTERGEIST REPORT.
Selected News:
Summer is the time for ins and outs. The three series that ended this season were HANASAKA TENSHI TENTEN-KUN, TSURIKKIES PINTAROU and SANJUUSHI. To replace them, three new series will be starting. In #32, BLACK CAT by Yabuki Kentarou (the author of YAMATO GENSOUKI) starts. In #33, we will see KAISER SPIKE, a volleyball manga, by Takeyama Yuusuke; and in #34, ROCKET DE TSUKINUKERO!, a racing manga, by Kiyu will begin. Also, #33 marks the much-awaited return of HUNTER x HUNTER to the pages of JUMP; and the next installment of BASTARD!! is slated for the #36/37 double issue.
BLACK CAT is about Train and Sven, a pair of sweepers who cleanse the streets of criminals. What makes this series different from the typical cop manga is that the main character, Train, was an assassin with the codename "Black Cat" until two years ago (so in a way, the situation is more like the main character of RUROUNI KENSHIN...). The first episode shows the duo standing up to help a criminal see his daughter before the syndicate he betrayed hunts him down. However, when the criminal loses his life in front of Train's eyes, the rest of the episode has Train chasing down the syndicate assassin.

SAND LAND
by Toriyama Akira
Started in #23, 2000

Overview: In the world as it stands, the lakes and rivers have dried up, and the one remaining water source is controlled by a greedy king. A sheriff by the name of Lao asks Beelzebub, prince of devils, to help him find a mystical water source. Beelzebub chooses Thief (a cunning old sage) to come with him on their trip; but what they found was a conspiracy by the king...
This Issue—Episode 10: The Illusionary Spring - Thief continues to tell Ale that the drought was all the king and Commander Zeu's doing—that the Pitch people were just trying to make a water-maker, and the army led by Shiva (Lao) was just a scapegoat. Ale refuses to believe the story, but lets Shiva's group go. Meanwhile, Beelzebub calls to Thief and Shiva, saying that he has found the spring, and guides the tank to it. At the spring, Beelzebub finds surviving Pitch people from the tragedy, and asks Shiva to leave this spring as is. Shiva agrees. Ale nonchalantly radios and asks the king about the conspiracy, only to find out that what Shiva was saying was true. Ale then calls Shiva's tank, and tells Shiva the location of the king's own water supply and that he just gave the guards a break.
