This is where EX shares some of its mail with the rest of its readers so that you, the fans, know what other fans are thinking.
We love to get mail from our readers. However, please remember that EX is not a store and we do not sell the merchandise we review. Check your local comic and hobby shops (and other places that carry anime items) if you're interested in purchasing any of these products. And, if all else fails, you can try some of the stores available online. But please don't ask us to sell things to you. (The mark up would be terrible.)
And to address another frequent request: no, we don't give out codes and cheats to games. However, we link the game reviews to corresponding FAQ pages at GameFaqs whenever possible. We hope this helps.
Thanks again, and keep those letters coming!

NINJA SCROLL 2?
From: Mike Nesto

OK, if NINJA RESURRECTION isn't the sequel to NINJA SCROLL what i would like to know is if there is a NINJA SCROLL 2.

Mike,

To put it simply, “no.”
There's no sequel, and MADHOUSE (the people who did NINJA SCROLL) have not announced any plans to do any sequels anytime soon.

EVA! EVA!
From: Kevin Niemczyk

Hey, first let me say you've got a great e-zine. It's great and often updates me on anime that I might want to buy. Anyways, I don't really need to say all this, you know your e-zine is great, yadda yadda yadda. My question concerns the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION anime series. I recently have bought the first tape and it got me hooked. I then followed and bought the entire series, up to Genesis 0:13. But this last tape doesn't make any sense. Is there a genesis 0:14? Or something that was supposed to go before the last tape that didn't make it in? I finished watching that tape last night and I am still confused about it.
My second question is also about NGE. In one of the tapes I bought, it came with an offer to buy the NGE comic. Is this comic the same as the video series or is it more of a sidestory thing?
  Thanks for reading.

Kevin,

Nope, there is no Genesis 0:14. The end of the series is more than a little bit confusing to say the least, and it was intentionally so by EVANGELION creator and director Anno Hideaki. There are two additional EVA items: the two movies that take place after the television series. These have been licensed by Manga Entertainment and will be released sometime in the future.
As for the comic, it is a “re-telling” of the story. Much of it is similar to the television series, but there are some parts of it that are different, and some things are gone into in much greater detail in the manga. The manga is drawn by EVANGELION character designer Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, so you know it's going to be good.

The Mailing List Again
From: Sean Hall

It would be very courteous to receive notification by email of when a new online issue has been published of your magazine. I'm trying to help start an anime club at my university (Pittsburg State University of Kansas, or PSU for short) and I am a very busy fellow. Considering that I don't have my own computer but do visit my email daily, getting a notification of a new issue would greatly help me out on this busy little otaku's life. Please tell me if anyone on your team would be willing to do such.

Sean,

We do. You can sign up for our notification list, which is available off of our main page or you can get to it directly from here. Once you subscribe, you will automatically receive notification once a new issue is released.
  It's that easy! =)

Fansubs
From: ShadowBlade

Hey guys, I just wanted to congratulate you (yeah, again!) on 4 years of hard work and excellence. I was reading through some of the recent fanmail that you've received, and I wanted to comment on Bobby Generic's message about Anime releases on DVD.
Most otaku that are into fansubs (like me) feel that they're pretty savvy in the way that they can get information these days. With so many web sites like animeondvd.com, dvdpricesearch.com, and magazines like EX.org, it's pretty easy nowadays to get an idea as to when our favorite titles are gonna hit shelves. If you're a total anime addict like myself, you're buying the fansubs, waiting about 4-16 months for it to be licensed in the states, and then trying to get it pumped right into your veins via online stores as soon as it's ready for pre-order.
Now, I'm not trying to start a war over fansubs again, but when you wet your palette on them for...say 6 months before it comes out, you tend to follow where it is, who licensed it in the US, and what the "rumored" release dates are.
  It's also fun to experiment with online stores and just type in random series names to see what you come up with. I remember when I saw MONONOKE HIME in the movie theaters, and less than a month later, Amazon.com finally listed a pre-order for it. Yeah, that was almost a year ago I think -_-;
Anyway, once you start to get an idea of where to look, you prevent yourself from spending the money on VHS box sets for COWBOY BEBOP, ESCAFLOWNE, and CHRONICLES OF THE HEROIC KNIGHT, and just wait the extra few months for it to hit the digital scene! ....or just get a friend in Japan who can mail you stuff direct like I do.

'Blade,

You don't mind if I call you Blade, do you?
There's one thing that bothered me about your post... You shouldn't ever BUY fansubs. People who sell fansubs are committing the crime of piracy. Fansubs themselves are a grey market at best, but when you start to pay for them, it crosses the line into the totally illegal.
In fact, many of these fansubs wind up in the stores of less-than-reputable small retailers, where people sometimes mistake them for legitimate releases.
At any rate, paying for fansubs is just plain wrong. Supporting legitimate DVDs and VHS is fine, but don't pay for your fansubs.

Unmasked!
From: Dave Jutsum

Thanks so much for a great 'zine. I wait with baited breath for each new installment. I have a few quick questions:

1.   I noticed that Gotoh Keiji signed his name in Katakana (the Japanese script usually used for foreign words). Why is this? Usually, people's names are written in Kanji, right?
2.   I also couldn't help but catch Charles McCarter's name as a producer (I think) on the English release of Cowboy Bebop and Chad Kime's at the end of a recent Pioneer press release. If it isn't prying too much, maybe you guys could write a little bit about your day jobs. I'm sure others would be interested as well.
3.   I'd like to read some coverage of the recent Fox dub of ESCAFLOWNE. Personally, I'm torn between hatingthem for the destruction of the score and liking them as the natural predecessors of Carl Macek, implanting fandom in America's current youth. It's very difficult to see such a wonderful series mucked with so carelessly, though. Is this the only way to get anime on American TV? If so, could people at least start making better dubs so that we don't have to shudder too often? (Merle... brrr!)

Thanks for your time and effort! I look forward to hearing from you soon.
  Shitsureeshimasu!

Dave,

Let's do the easy question first. Japanese people have several choices when signing their names. They can use kanji, hiragana, or katakana (or even roman letters). What they use is a matter of personal choice and style. Gotoh-san signs his name with katakana, Kawamoto-san (of COWBOY BEBOP) uses hiragana, and Takahashi Rumiko uses a combination of hiragana and kanji. It's just a matter of what they prefer.
And yes, it's no secret that I work at Bandai, and Chad works at Pioneer. But I think people imagine our jobs to be more glamorous than they actually are. I mean, oftentimes I sit for 10 or 12 hours, chained to a desk... (just kidding).
Coverage of the FOX edit of ESCAFLOWNE is all over the anime news groups. Bandai produced the dub, handed it over to FOX (in an unedited form), and FOX edited it. That's pretty much all there is to say, except that a lot of people don't like the editing. (Of course, then they should just buy the unedited DVD...hehe)

More Movies!
From: Constant Gaw

Heya guys, just wondering if you know when the heck MEMORIES is going to come out in the US. I've been waiting forever for that silly movie! And what about JIN-ROH? (I think that's how you spell it). All these good movies that nobody wants to touch! ARGH!

Constant,

Well, no one's bought MEMORIES yet, and it's been several years now. Rumor is that the asking price is too high. However, good news...Bandai Entertainment just announced that it will be releasing JIN-ROH. But it probably won't be for some time. At least it's coming...

Manga Mags
From: Salman Afzal

I recently found your amazing web-site. Congratulations on amazing job. I can't believe I missed so many volumes. But not to worry, currently I am going through all the back issues. Yes, it is going to take me some time (I have to read every article before I move on to the next), but I'm looking forward to it. I just wanted to ask you for some favors.

1.   There are some amazing monthly manga magazines out there (Viz's ANIMERICA EXTRA, Dark Horse's MANGA BLAST). I'd love to buy them both I cant afford them. Why don't you rate them, like which has more interesting stories, background of the stories etc?
2.   Could you all please do some article on your own favorite Manga (both American releases & Japanese) & Anime? And why? It would sure help us out.
3.   Why dont you guys do game-soundtracks as well. I'd love to see your rating of Unreal soundtrack (trust me, its amazing, just like the game).

Please say yes to all above.
Dont you guys dare get out of this wonderful project of your for another 30-40 years.

Salman,

OK...

1.   Well, it depends on which type of stories you like better. Your best bet is to find out what you can about the stories running in each title. Lots of people, for example, buy ANIMERICA EXTRA because of FUSHIGI YUUGI.
2.   We've been kicking this idea around for a while, and it will probably be realized in the last issue of the year, which will be out in early December.
3.   We do, when the occasion warrants it. We've done game soundtracks in the past, but the stuff to review on CD is getting pretty thin these days, and we don't have as many CD reviewers as we used to.

Another thirty years? I think I need to go lie down...
