GONZO certainly isn't resting on its past successes. Even before the completion of
BLUE SUB, the work began on GONZO's first television
show, GATEKEEPERS. Based on the video game they had done previously,
GATEKEEPERS is the story of a group of young people with super abilities
defending the world from an alien invasion. Of course, since it's a GONZO project,
you can expect a lot of high-quality work.
And there are also two games based on BLUE SUBMARINE NO. 6,
one for the PlayStation and one for the Dreamcast. Both of these have new animated footage done by the
original production crew, and some of these scenes were previewed to audiences at Anime Expo to wild
applause.
Moving further into television, GONZO is also working on a
new television series called VANDREAD,
which they announced at Anime Expo as well. This show looks to be a combination of giant robots and
teenagers, and while it doesn't sound incredibly new or original, it will be interesting to see what
GONZO will do to try and inject new life into this mainstay anime format.
And, of course, GATEKEEPERS hasn't ended yet.
GONZO seems to have embraced the concept of digital
animation to an extent few other anime studios have. They're hoping that it will give their work an
edge, both in efficiency and quality. In the meantime, they have turned out a very successful
OVA series in BLUE SUBMARINE NO. 6, and are in the middle
of production on a hit television series. But there are still many plans that lay ahead for the
creative staff of this studio here in Ogikubo. When I visited GONZO, I noticed
that many of the staff, typical of other anime studios, were working late into the night. And with
GONZO's current production schedule, it looks like the staff won't have any
free time in the months to come.
