Day Three: July 7th, 2001

The Masquerade

The seating capacity for the masquerade was twice that of previous years, and purchasing tickets guaranteed you assigned seating. In this regard, the masquerade event was greatly improved over previous years.

But the most memorable aspect of masquerade this year was the collaborative efforts of Anime Expo and the Starlight Foundation to realize the wish of Omar, a young boy battling a severe illness. Anime Expo and its sponsors went the extra mile to make sure Omar and his family felt welcome...

A.D.Vision, Bandai Entertainment, Pioneer Entertainment, and Suncoast Video showered Omar with a generous amount of anime goodies and DVDs, and even a DVD player to watch them on. After being greeted by his favorite Tenchi Muyo characters, Omar thanked Anime Expo for making his wish come true—and received a standing ovation from the audience. Best of wishes, Omar, and get well soon!

There were a lot of dance numbers inspired by pop culture, included one featuring the music of Britney Spears and N'SYNC, as well as two sultry numbers inspired by the movie Moulin Rouge.

More dancing characters! From left to right: Ulala from the Dreamcast game Space Channel 5, Kirigoe Mima from the movie Perfect Blue, and Shin-chan from Crayon Shin-chan.

From left to right: the adorable Card Captor Sakura kids make another appearance this year, as does the professional Japanese cosplay group Uran. Meanwhile, two other kids look cute dressed up as characters from the series Digi-Carat.

From left to right: we have two sets of cosplayers dressed up in the feathery outfits from CLAMP's Clover, while the video gaming influence shows in the numerous appearances of the black wizard from Square's Final Fantasy IX.

From left to right: Magic Knight Rayearth (and Mokona too!), Angel Sanctuary (but what the heck is a Zaku doing there?), and a hilarious Fushigi Yuugi skit. The FY cosplayers dodged the time limit by splitting their skit into two parts and identifying themselves as two "separate" groups in the schedule. Clever, that...

While the judges pick the winning entries, Kikuko Inoue (the voice of Belldandy) performs the A!MG opening theme on stage. Now there's a voice to die for...
