This is where EX shares some of its mail with
the rest of its readers so that you, the fans, know what other fans
are thinking.
We love to get mail from our readers. However, please
remember that EX is not a store and we do not
sell the merchandise we review. Check your local comic and hobby shops
(and other places that carry anime items) if you're interested in
purchasing any of these products. And, if all else fails, you can try
some of the stores
available online. But please don't ask us to sell
things to you. (The mark up would be terrible.)
And to address another frequent request: no, we don't give out codes
and cheats to games. However, we link the game reviews to corresponding
FAQ pages at GameFaqs
whenever possible. We hope this helps.
Thanks again, and keep those letters coming!

Waiting for a WALTZ
From: Kenedy Nguyen

Do you know any online places where I can get a English dubbed or
subtitled copy of GUNDAM WING: ENDLESS WALTZ?
I looked everywhere but I can't seem to find place that has it.
From: Charles Kim

I was wondering where I could get the ENDLESS WALTZ
video or DVD. I would like the whole trilogy, and
I wanted to know if you could help me find it over the internet.
From: Joseph Kiser

I was just wondering if you could tell me if GUNDAM
WING: ENDLESS WALTZ is going to be shown on Cartoon Network with
the GUNDAM WING series? I have tried all the
sites I have found for GUNDAM WING and Cartoon
Network and haven't recieved an answer. If you could help me out it
would be highly appreciated.
From: Marie

Hello! I am an avid fan of GUNDAM WING since it
premiered on Cartoon Network. Since I highly doubt that Cartoon Network
will ever dub the ENDLESS WALTZ movie, is there
any where to get it in English?
Since Bandai Entertainment has licensed
GUNDAM WING, including ENDLESS
WALTZ, they will be releasing it eventually, but of course, first
they have to release all of GUNDAM WING.
However, look for ENDLESS WALTZ to air
on the Cartoon Network after GUNDAM WING finishes
its first airing. Due to the violence, it's only going to be aired in the
midnight slot, so set your VCR...
Will the Real Yagyu Jubei Please Stand Up?
From: Aaron

In regards to your review of NINJA RESURRECTION,
Although the companies which produced MAKAI TENSHO
and JUBEI NINPONCHO are different, the character
of Jubei Yagyu is one in the same. He was a famous samurai in fuedal
Japan during the 1600's. Of course like many
famous samurai, his story has been greatly mixed with legend.
No one's disputing that. The fact is, though, that
many people believe that NINJA RESURRECTION is the
sequel to NINJA SCROLLS, which just isn't the case.
And yes, Yagyu Jubei has turned up a lot in anime; most recently in the
action/comedy JUBEI-CHAN: SECRET OF THE LOVELY
EYEPATCH. And that's not a sequel to NINJA
SCROLLS, either, even though it's from the same Executive
Producer.
Licensing 101
From: Diego Ayala

When anime gets to the U.S. and then they sell
merchandise based on it, who gets the profit? The anime creator, or the
company making it possible to be shown on U.S. TV??
I hope you can answer me or give some site or something to answer my
question...
Licensing is a complicated process, but basically
in order for someone to legally show something on U.S.
television, it must be licensed from Japan. This gives the licensee the
right to adapt it and have it shown on television. Each agreement is
different, but for officially licensed products, a license fee must be paid
to the company holding the original copyright.
For example, if I wanted to produce a
POKÉMON sleeping bag, I'd have to get a
license from the license holder, Nintendo. I'd pay them a fee to use the
characters on the product, and that fee goes back to the parent company
and the creator. The people making the merchandise, however, also make
money off of this (otherwise why would they do it?) but some money does go
back to the original rightsholder.
As I said, it's complicated and the specifics vary from one
agreement to another.
Pandas and Serpents and Spiders OH MY!
From: August Ragone

I would like to answer a question from the recent letters section, from
Joan Di Lieto, who asks, "I'm looking for a Japanese animated film late
50's, early 60's. Main
character 'Anjo' little boy, panda sidekick, fights a battle with a huge
spider, his mom turns into a swan. I have been searching for years!"
Well, here's your answer: that would be Toei Doga's feature
film PANDA AND THE MAGIC SERPENT (ANJO
TO JISHIO MARU, 1961) which was also released
theatrically in the United States. The fourth feature-length animated film
from Toei Doga was available in the 1980s on
U.S. video cassette; unfortuantely, I cannot remember
the companyalthough it was one of the major independents at the time
(like Family Home Entertainment, which originally released
ROBOTECH).
Hope this helps!
Thanks. I'm sure that the reader who asked will be
grateful for the information. I know I certainly didn't know what it
was.
FINAL FANTASY A Fantasy?
From: Brian Fattorini

I don't believe you've done an article or anything of the kind on it (and I
fully intend to have a look at the AniPike after I write this), and I think
you might want to run something on...
The FINAL FANTASY movie. I saw a bit that
my friend downloaded that showed a test for some of their images, and I was
astounded. Apparently it's to be all CGI a la
TOY STORY, however, the attention to detail and the
sheer beauty of the images makes FF8 look like a bunch
of kids got togther with some Crayolas and a story line of semi-epic
proportions.
It would also be nice to know whether I'm being hoaxed, so, being
that you're a reputable institution (and being that if there
IS such a film in production, you may want to do a
small spot on it) would you consider looking into it? Thanks very much.
No, SQUARE is totally serious
about their FINAL FANTASY
movie. Last year at E3, they had a theater set up to show the trailer
(which is probably what your friend downloaded). And I expect that they will
have more information on the film available at E3
this year. We'll see what we can find out for you, as this does look like
it could be a revolutionary endeavor.
Politics and DVD
From: Frank Jaye

"The Real Politics of Anime" was a good column. i totally agree with
the viewpoint. but consider for a second, the migration to
DVD. the initial investment in a
DVD player will be offset by the price of
DVDs. in most cases, there are twice as many
episodes on each disc compared to the tape. and it usually costs as much
as the subbed tape or about $5 more. I hate dubs as
much as the next guy, which is why I love this new age of
DVDs. love EX, keep it up.
And retailers love it because they only have to stock
one item to please both types of fan, which really helps them maximize shelf
space. And so far, the reception to anime DVDs has
been a warm one. So yes, it looks like DVDs are
certainly going to help shape the future of anime in the
US.
