After the unusual premise of G GUNDAM, the familiarity of GUNDAM WING's setting came as a welcome relief to many fans: it featured space colonies in orbit, an oppressive Earth government, and a struggle for independence. But in addition to the heavy philosophy of war versus pacifism, GUNDAM WING also put a great emphasis on style, with flamboyant Gundam designs and pretty-faced boys as the pilots. With the addition of an intricately woven plot and plenty of head-banging mecha action, the show became an instant winner. The brooding cast of handsome boys also attracted a lot of female fans to a series previously dominated by males.
To date, GUNDAM WING remains the only alternate universe to produce its own set of sequels, including the radio drama BLIND TARGET and the lavishly animated original video series ENDLESS WALTZ, which was subsequently compiled into a special movie edition with additional footage. Nee NEW MOBILE REPORT GUNDAM WING, the series was renamed to MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM WING for its U.S. release, to establish a better connection to the title of the original series.
