RIAP Writes

—by David Ho

Let's face it, anime fans suffer from "un-coolness." But luckily, we are not alone! Other groups of people also suffer from "un-coolness" such as Trekkers, comic book readers and engineers. What makes these groups of people "un-cool"? And what can be done to make these people admired and respected by others outside the community? By applying the Vulcan logic of my uncanny mutant mind, I believe I have the answer for un-cool anime fans...
Welcome to the World of Extreme Anime!
Yes, you heard me right! I propose that we lump anime into the same category with Extreme Sports, equal to other such wacko and bizarre pastimes as snowboarding, BASE jumping, wakeboarding and bungee cord dangling.
  Why?
Because I've discovered that anime fans really aren't "un-cool," but instead, they just have an image problem. If we can just correct the image problem, anime fans will then be considered cool. Just look at the similarities between anime fans and Extreme Sports lunatics.

Extreme Sports:

•  Lunatics are few in numbers compared to population as a whole.
•  Lunatics indulge in physically dangerous behavior such as sleep deprivation on long ECO challenges, consumption of alcohol before jumping off a bridge with a giant rubber band tied to their feet, wearing colorful costumes while careening down the slope of a mountain at 60 mph with no brakes, etc.
•  Lunatics willing to spend exorbitant amounts of money on equipment which is rare and expensive.
•  Lunatics have no life outside of their particular sport.
•  Lunatics are usually single and unmarried, choosing to dedicate their entire lives to the sport.
•  Circle of friends is primarily fellow Extreme Sports addicts.
•  Ignore the fact that others find their sport dangerous and insane.
•  Far ahead of other athletes by pioneering today what might become a future Olympic sport.
•  Always trying to introduce their love of the sport to other, closet lunatics.
•  Seriously seeking the "ultimate high."

Anime:

•  Fans are few in numbers compared to population as a whole.
•  Fans indulge in physically dangerous behavior such as sleep deprivation at anime conventions, consumption of alcohol before jumping on stage to sing anime songs, wearing ridiculously colorful costumes while parading around a public who has a right to bear arms (at least in America), etc.
•  Fans willing to spend exorbitant amounts of money on anime which is rare and expensive.
•  Fans have no life at all.
•  Fans are usually single and unmarried, choosing to dedicate their entire lives to anime.
•  Circle of friends is primarily fellow anime addicts.
•  Revel in the fact that others find their interest in anime dangerously insane.
•  Far ahead of the mainstream by pioneering today what might become the future of adolescent time wasting.
•  Always trying to convert the innocent to follow the path of anime.
•  Seeking highly the ultimately serious.
